TO STAY OR NOT TO STAY?
GERMAN-SPEAKING EXILES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AFTER 1945
The fifth biennial conference of the International Feuchtwanger Society (IFS) will take place at the University of Southern California on 14-16 September 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Hosted by the Feuchtwanger Memorial Library of the USC Libraries, the conference will also feature programs and events developed in collaboration with Villa Aurora, the German Consulate General Los Angeles, USC Shoah Foundation Institute, and other cultural institutions in the Los Angeles area.
The conference will explore the decision faced by all German-speaking exiles in Southern California at the end of World War II whether to return to Europe or to stay in the United States. Topics might include the political and socio-cultural factors influencing the decision to stay or leave, the status of the German-speaking exiles in Southern California in 1939-45, Lion Feuchtwanger’s final years in California and his reception in divided Germany, the cases of others who stayed in the United States, the experiences and the reception of those who returned to the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, and to Austria, and the legacy of the German-speaking exiles in Los Angeles.
Conference organizers would welcome papers on other topics related to the conference's main theme. Proposals are invited for 20-minute presentations.
Those interested in participating are invited to submit a brief abstract (up to 300 words) and a short bio to IFS President Ian Wallace .
Selected conference papers will be published as a volume of the series (Peter Lang: Oxford).
The conference languages are English, German, and French.
